BOI Credit Card Features & Benefits

BOI credit cards come with the usual banking features:

  • Interest-Free Period: Up to 51 days on purchases (depending on billing date). Just like any other bank, if you pay the full statement by the due date, no interest is charged.
  • Revolving Credit: If you can’t pay your full bill, you can pay a small amount due (atleast 10%) by the due date. This lets you pay the rest later, and BOI charges a low interest rate (1.70% per month) only on the amount you carry forward. If the bill is fully overdue, then the charges would be (2.50% per month).
  • EMI Conversions: Cardholders can convert retail purchases of  ₹5,00 or more into EMIs (up to 36 months). Cash withdrawals are not eligible for the EMI.
  • Cash Advances: You can withdraw cash against your credit limit (up to 50% of the limit), BOI charges 2.5% (min ₹50) at branches and non-BOI ATMs. At the BOI ATM, the minimum charge is 2%. It also has the highest interest rate at 2.5% per month if not repaid immediately.
  • Balance Transfer: BOI allows transfer-in of up to 75% of another bank’s card’s outstanding balance (min ₹ 5,000) to a BOI card. This would help in consolidating the other banks’ debt as well.
  • Lounge Access: Select BOI card includes complimentary access to lounges. For example, the RuPay select (and certain Bharat cards) offer access to domestic and international lounges. (These are provided via Rupay/Bharat Lounge programs.
  • Insurance: Many BOI cards include personal accident cover (up to ₹10-20 lakh for Rupay Platinum and select). BOI also provides a discounted mediclaim premium to cardholders.

While BOI cards have many standard features, there are a few noteworthy points:

  • Concierge Service: Rupay select, and some premium cards include 24-hour concierge support (travel/hotel/booking, etc.)

Earning Rewards, Star Points, and Cashback

Bank of India Credit cards have a Star Rewardz loyalty program. You earn BOI star points on your spending, which can be redeemed for gifts and spending credits:

Earning Rate

The Bank of India will reward you more if you spend more monthly. For every ₹100 spent in a month, you earn 1 star point; If your total monthly spend is upto ₹5,000.1.5 points if spends are between ₹5,001- 10,000, and 2 points if spends exceed ₹10,000. For instance, spending ₹4,800 in a month would give you around 48 points, while spending ₹12,000 would give you 2 Points Per ₹100=240 points.)

Redemption

Points can be redeemed at any time online at the BOI Starz Reward portal or via the BOI mobile app. Each Point is worth ₹1 when used toward the annual fee or as a statement credit. For example, if you have 500 star points, you would be eligible to clear off your outstanding statement credit of ₹500 or the annual joining fee of ₹500. Any remaining points will be credited back to your Credit Card Account at a value of ₹0.50 per point. Which would be 2 star points is equal to ₹1.

Cashback/Offers

In addition to the star points, BOI also runs time-to-time category-based cashback offers. For instance, the RuPay Select card offers fixed discounts on groceries and movies via vouchers each month.

The overall aspect is that BOI cards reward regular card use with star points. The point value is modest (₹0.50-₹1 per month). So, these cards are best suited for those who spend modestly and can utilise the bundle benefits offered by the bank, such as insurance, lounge access, and vouchers.

Eligibility Criteria

While the eligibility criteria are different for different cards at BOI, the basic eligibility criteria in general for individuals are:

  • Age: At least 18 years old, with certain exceptions for different cards, such as swadhan, where the age range could be between 21 and 65 years.
  • Nationality: The nationality requirement is Indian or NRI. However, foreign nationals employed in India and currently working there can also apply for the BOI Credit Card.
  • Income: A regular or steady income source is required. However, there is no clear minimum eligibility mentioned on the BOI official website. Additionally, there is no mention of the specific criteria for salaried or self-employed consumers who might be eligible to apply for the card. However, there would be a clear assessment of the credit history, with a minimum CIBIL score of 740.
  • Credit history: As per the Bank of India’s offering, you need a good credit history or a Good CIBIL Score. However, there is one card offered by the bank that might not require a good credit history or a perfect CIBIL profile. The BOI SwaDhan credit card is issued based on a TDR or a Fixed Deposit.

Fees & Charges

Annual Fees

Vary by card. This could also include charges, such as for Add-on Cards (for family members), which usually have no additional fee or a nominal fee (e.g., ₹100-300). Whichever card the consumer chooses, they must check the fees on the bank’s official website.

Late Payment Fee

If the minimum due is not paid by the due date, BOI charges interest at 2.5% per month on the unpaid balance, plus a penalty, which generally ranges from ₹300 to ₹500. Consumers must avoid any payment defaults to avoid late fee charges.

Foreign Currency (Forex) Charges

3.5% on all international transactions (both Purchases and cash withdrawals).

Balance Inquiry/ATM Fee

Balance enquiries are free at BOI ATMs, but cost ₹ 20 per enquiry at other banks’ ATMs. The note shows ₹ 20 on other ATMs (it may appear as ₹21 with GST)

Over Limit Fee

₹10 per transaction if a transaction exceeds the assigned credit limit.

Reward Redemption

BOI allows 1 Free redemption per year (i.e., credit card renewal fee waiver if you redeem enough points). Beyond that, points are converted to cash at ₹0.50/point, with no extra fees.

Other miscellaneous

There is no fuel surcharge on BOI Credit cards (BOI replaced the fuel surcharge waiver scheme with a points system). Aside from the annual fee, the main cost is the BOI Foreign Currency forex Charges, which generally range from 3% to 3.5%, depending on the card-to-card rate. Cash Advance fees and Atm fees are standard.

How To Apply For a BOI Credit Card?

You can apply for a BOI Credit Card directly through BOI Bank.

Branch Application

Visit any BOI branch with the required documents, like your KYC documents and income proofs. Ask for a credit card application form. The bank’s official staff will guide you through the remaining steps to complete the documents and advise you on the credit cards available at the bank that best suit your needs.

Processing tenure

At this bank, you generally need to check your credit history and verify your other documents. If you have applied for a secured card, then the bank would check the status of your fixed deposit. This process generally takes between 7 to 10 days.

Approval

If the application is approved, like any general banking procedure, such as sending the cheque book or a new debit card, your credit card will be dispatched to your registered address.

However, some basic instant approvals or forms can be filled out via net banking or a mobile application for the initial stages of the procedure, after which the digital documents can be submitted via mail or as per instructions from the Bank itself.

Activating Your BOI Credit Card

After receiving your credit card, you must activate the card before using it. BOI provides various methods to activate the credit card. I have listed some of the methods below.

Through the Omni Neo Mobile Banking App

To activate your BOI Omni Neo credit card and set its PIN, simply log in to the BOI Omni Neo App or BOI Omni Neo App (Apple), navigate to Manage Cards within the Credit Card tab, select Activate Card for your inactive card, verify your details with the card’s expiry date and a mobile OTP, and then follow the prompts to immediately set your desired 4-digit PIN using a final verification OTP.

Through Internet Banking

You can easily activate your credit card and set your PIN by logging in to your bank’s Internet Banking platform, navigating to the Pay > My Cards section, selecting the Activate Card option for the inactive card, and following the on-screen prompts with the card’s expiry details and verification OTPs.

Through Branches

Simply visit your nearest branch and speak with a bank representative who can process this request for you.

Best BOI Credit Card For Different Categories

Travel Card

The BOI Visa Platinum International card is recommended for frequent travellers. It has global acceptance and a high cash limit, making it useful overseas. Visa’s global network means you can use it widely. (The visa gold card is similar, but usually has a slightly lower credit limit, so it’s secondary.)

Everyday Rewards

The BOI RuPay select credit card stands out for maximum rewards and benefits at a moderate cost. It’s 2x points on all spend and includes lounge access, making it more attractive for high spenders. However, the ₹800 fee means you should use it heavily to justify.

Cashback/Savings

If you want tangible savings, the RuPay Platinum card’s partner offers can get you cashback on bills and dining, though the exact value depends on usage.

Secured option

If your credit score is poor, the BOI Swadhan RuPay  Platinum is” the best card you can get” at BOI. It’s basically guaranteed approval and will also build your credit for the future.

Low fee

For a minimal cost, the RuPay Platinum (nil fee) is good. For a slightly higher fee, the Visa Gold at ₹300 is among the cheapest internationally accepted cards.

The best card is very subjective. And it mostly depends on your needs and spending patterns; you can find the card that suits you. For instance, if you travel a lot abroad, you can get a  BOI visa Gold or Platinum international credit card.

Bottom Line

Bank of India Credit cards offer a comprehensive bundle of benefits, services, and everyday rewards, generally aimed at everyday consumers, as well as luxury offerings for the premium cardholders. These credit cards are reliable for everyday banking and make shopping easy. The fee structure is very generous for the RuPay cards, which have zero or low annual charges. The rewards programme is fairly basic, with the value mostly at ₹0.5-₹1 per point.

Apart from this, some BOI cards also offer smooth integration with UPI, enabling quick cardless payments. This enhances the value of the BOI card and its utility for everyday use.

By carefully choosing your BOI Card, you can save a lot on everyday expenses and premium luxuries.
