The Goods and Services Tax Council has yet to decide whether to charge 18% GST on transactions below ₹2,000 processed by payment aggregators. This decision could potentially impact customers’ ability to make small online payments. According to reports from CNBC-TV18, the matter has been referred to the GST fitment committee for further review.

During the 54th GST Council meeting held on September 9, 2024, discussions took place regarding the proposal to charge an 18% GST on the income payment aggregators generated from smaller transactions under ₹2,000. But the council could not reach a conclusive decision on the matter.

Uttarakhand Finance Minister Premchand Aggarwal expressed that the potential implementation of this tax could have significant implications for consumers. As a result, the matter has been referred to the GST fitment committee for a thorough review. The fitment committee will now study the possible impacts and outcomes of such a move and prepare a detailed report for the GST Council to consider. This indicates that the decision is still pending, and further evaluation is required before any final decision can be made.

In the meantime, consumers and businesses will need to wait for the GST fitment committee’s review and subsequent decision by the GST Council before any changes to the taxation of online transactions below ₹2,000 are implemented.

Conclusion

The decision to impose an 18% GST on transactions below ₹2,000 is still pending, as the GST Council has referred the matter to the fitment committee for review. This potential tax could have implications for consumers and businesses, particularly affecting small online payments. Until the fitment committee completes its review and the GST Council reaches a final decision, no changes to the taxation of transactions below ₹2,000 will be implemented. Consumers and businesses will need to await the committee’s report and the subsequent decision by the GST Council before any changes take effect.
