Axis Bank Removes EDGE Rewards from Burgundy Debit Card; Lounge & BMS Benefits Now Spend-Based

30 July, 2026 / By Kartik Kanwar / 0 Comment

Axis Bank has announced a major devaluation of its Burgundy Debit Card, effective 1st September 2026. The Burgundy Account is one of the bank’s flagship premium banking relationships and has gained significant popularity in recent months, especially after lifetime free (LTF) Axis Bank Horizon and Magnus Credit Cards were offered with eligible Burgundy Savings and Salary Accounts.

Major Axis Burgundy Debit Card Devaluation Announced

However, the latest changes significantly reduce the value proposition of the accompanying Burgundy Debit Card. The biggest setback is the complete discontinuation of the EDGE Rewards Program, meaning cardholders will no longer earn reward points on eligible debit card transactions. Besides this, complimentary airport lounge access and BookMyShow benefits will now require minimum spending over the previous three calendar months.

EDGE Rewards Program Discontinued

The biggest change is the complete removal of the EDGE Rewards Program.

From 1st September 2026:

  • No EDGE Reward Points will be earned on eligible debit card transactions.
  • The 2X Birthday Reward Points benefit will also be discontinued.
  • Existing accumulated EDGE Reward Points can still be redeemed as per the applicable redemption timelines.
  • All existing MCC-based reward earning rules will cease to apply.

This effectively removes one of the most valuable features of the Burgundy Debit Card.

Airport Lounge Access Now Requires Spending

Complimentary airport lounge access will now be linked to spending on the debit card. To qualify, cardholders must spend at least ₹10,000 during the previous three calendar months. For newly issued debit cards, this spending requirement will be waived during the month of issuance and the following three calendar months.

From 1st October 2026, the following transactions will not count towards the spending requirement:

  • UPI transactions
  • Wallet reloads
  • Credit card bill payments
  • Cash withdrawals

BookMyShow Benefits Also Become Spend-Based

Axis Bank has introduced the same spending requirement for BookMyShow offers as airport lounge access. To continue enjoying movie and non-movie offers, customers must spend at least ₹10,000 in the previous three calendar months.

Similar to lounge access, newly issued cards will receive a waiver during the initial eligibility period, while UPI transactions, wallet reloads, credit card bill payments, and cash withdrawals will be excluded from eligible spends from 1st October 2026.

New Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) Charges

Axis Bank will levy a 3.5% DCC markup fee plus GST whenever customers choose to pay in Indian Rupees (INR) for eligible international transactions.

The charge will apply to:

  • Transactions performed overseas where payment is made in INR.
  • Transactions made with overseas-registered merchants, even if the purchase is made from India.

Insurance Eligibility Tightened

Axis Bank has also revised the eligibility criteria for complimentary debit card insurance. Previously, customers only needed to make one eligible debit card transaction within 90 days before the insurance event.

From 1st September 2026, customers must make at least one eligible debit card transaction within the previous 30 days to remain eligible for insurance coverage.

Axis Bank Burgundy Debit Card Revisions

Bottom Line

The removal of the EDGE Rewards Program is undoubtedly the biggest blow in this devaluation. Many Burgundy customers actively used the debit card for credit card bill payments to accumulate valuable EDGE Reward Points, and that earning opportunity will now come to an end. Combined with the introduction of spend-based eligibility for lounge access and BookMyShow benefits, the Burgundy Debit Card becomes considerably less rewarding than before.

Interestingly, this move may not be limited to the Burgundy Debit Card alone. It remains to be seen whether Axis Bank will announce a similar discontinuation of EDGE Reward Points across its entire debit card portfolio, as many users will now be watching closely for further communication from the bank.
