21 September, 2024 / By Pranjal Kimta / 2 Comment

We live in an era where anything can get hyped up and on trends within minutes. Be it skincare products or a reel, sometimes even a wink. With the growing age of digitization, where all of us humans are connected with each other through social media, anything can go viral. One such trending thing is the viral metal credit cards.

Metal Credit Cards Worth Hype

In recent times, the credit card market has seen a growth in people opting for metal credit cards. These cards are different from the regular plastic ones as they are made of metal, offering a sense of luxury and exclusivity. They have become popular among people who value status and sophistication. However, before opting for a metal credit card, one should think about whether these credit cards truly provide enough benefits to justify their usually high annual fees. By the end of this article, you will have a better understanding of whether metal credit cards are worth considering, especially in the Indian market, where practical details and value play a significant role in consumer decision-making.

Pros of Metal Credit Cards

  • Aesthetics: Metal credit cards are visually appealing and, due to their impressive aesthetics and substantial weight, carry a sense of sophistication and prestige.
  • Perks and Benefits: Many metal credit cards offer a range of perks, such as concierge services, travel benefits, and rewards programs, making them attractive for users seeking additional value from their credit cards.
  • Travel Benefits: Some metal cards come with travel credits, airport lounge access, and travel insurance, meeting the needs of frequent travelers.
  • Security Features: Metal credit cards often boast advanced security features such as RFID-blocking technology and EMV chips, helping users feel more secure by reducing worries about identity theft and fraud.
  • Durability: Metal cards’ durability exceeds that of their plastic counterparts. They offer a longer lifespan and potentially reduce the need for card replacements, making them a practical choice for long-term use.

Cons of Metal Credit Cards

  • High Annual Fees: Many metal credit cards come with high annual fees, which can be restrained for some users, especially when compared to no-fee or low-fee credit card options available in the market.
  • Limited Acceptance: Due to their unique composition, some merchants and vendors may need help processing metal credit cards, which could potentially inconvenience the cardholder.
  • Weight: Although the weight of metal credit cards is often mentioned as a positive characteristic, it can also be a drawback for some users. Carrying a heavy wallet or purse may not appeal to individuals, especially in a country like India, where public transportation and urban mobility are common.
  • Environmental Impact: Metal credit cards may have a higher ecological impact compared to plastic cards, as the production and disposal of metal cards can contribute to greater energy consumption and waste generation.

Are Metal Credit Cards Worth It?

In the Indian credit card market, the decision to opt for a metal credit card ultimately depends on the preferences and financial habits of the applicant. For example, the OneCard, a lifetime free credit card, offers the ease of a metal card without the burden of annual fees, making it an attractive option for those seeking the premium feel of a metal card without the additional costs. On the other hand, the American Express Platinum Card, with its annual fee of ₹60,000, provides a range of exclusive benefits such as airport lounge access, travel credits, and rewards programs, serving individuals who prioritize luxury travel and lifestyle experiences.

Metal credit cards may look nice and make you feel important, but they often have high annual fees. These fees might not be worth it, especially when there are credit cards with no fees or low fees available in India. Before getting a metal credit card in India, individuals should carefully think about whether the benefits of having one match their spending habits and lifestyle. This includes considering factors like limited merchant acceptance, the weight of the card, and the potential environmental impact.

Bottom Line

Whether metal credit cards are worth the hype ultimately depends on an individual’s financial goals, spending patterns, and lifestyle choices. For those who prioritize luxury experiences, travel benefits, and top-tier customer service, a metal credit card may match their needs and preferences. In the Indian market, options like the OneCard provide the premium feel of a metal card without additional costs, while high-end cards like the American Express Platinum Card meet the needs of individuals who value luxury travel and lifestyle experiences.

Before opting for a metal credit card, individuals should carefully assess whether the benefits align with their spending habits, consider factors, and then make an informed decision based on personal needs and priorities.

There are few things which needs correction in your post.
First, metal doesn’t have more environmental impact than plastics. so correct that.
Second, you talk about inconvenience for vendors to use metal cards, almost 99$ vendors doesn’t even notice the material type of the card, so correct it to.
    Rest is allright.
As a loyal reader to your posts, I am not criticising but drawing your attention towards some facts, that’s it. Don’t get me wrong. I benefited many times from your card posts. Recently, HDFC point 70% redemption blog. I didn’t know that. But just because of your post I was able to redeem my points for vouchers with greater value, so thanks for that.

Firstly, I’d like to thank you for being a loyal reader of our blogs. I am also very grateful for your feedback.

Regarding the environmental impact, you make a valid point. While metal cards do have their own environmental considerations, the overall impact can vary based on various factors, including production and lifecycle. It’s a complex issue, and I’ll make sure to clarify that in future posts.

As for the convenience of using metal cards, I understand your perspective. Many vendors may not notice the material type, but some do appreciate the premium feel and added durability that metal offers.
