HDFC and Axis Bank Fined by RBI for Non-Compliance of Directives

12 September, 2024 / By Pranjal Kimta / 0 Comment

The Reserve Bank of India has penalized two of the country’s most popular private-sector banks. HDFC Bank and Axis Bank were fined ₹1 crore and ₹1.91 crore, respectively on 3rd September 2024.

The RBI fined Axis Bank for several reasons. The bank allowed ineligible entities to open savings accounts, failed to provide Unique Customer Identification Codes (UCIC), and did not correctly secure collateral for agricultural loans. One of its fully-owned subsidiaries acted as a technology service provider, which is against current regulations. These actions violated certain sections of the Banking Regulation Act, due to which the RBI imposed a penalty of ₹1.91 crore on Axis Bank following a statutory inspection based on its financial position as of March 31, 2023.

On the other hand, the RBI fined HDFC Bank for not following certain guidelines related to interest rates on deposits, use of recovery agents, and customer service. The bank offered gifts beyond the permitted limit, opened accounts for ineligible entities, and did not stick to guidelines on customer contact outside permitted hours. These actions were found during a statutory inspection conducted regarding the bank’s financial position. The fines were announced on September 10, 2024.

At the close of trading on the BSE, the stock prices of HDFC Bank and Axis Bank showed slight increases. Axis Bank’s shares closed at ₹1,187.00, marking a 1.40% increase, while HDFC Bank’s shares ended at ₹1,650.60, rising by 0.19%.

Bottom Line

The penalties imposed by the Reserve Bank of India on HDFC Bank and Axis Bank show the regulatory authority’s commitment to maintaining banking regulations. The recent fines remind all banks to follow the rules set by the RBI for fair and clear banking practices. Though the penalties caused some changes in stock prices, they highlight the importance of following regulations to maintain the integrity of the banking sector.
