Changes Coming to Amex Platinum Travel Credit Card

There has been a lot of buzz about upcoming changes to American Express Credit Cards in India, especially since the issuance of new American Express credit cards was halted. Even we at Card Insider shared insider news regarding changes to the American Express Platinum and Gold Charge cards.

We would like to clarify that there have been no changes made to Marriott redemptions.

American Express has now announced updates for the American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card. These shall be implemented from 1st April 2025. As previously predicted, the Taj vouchers will now lose value and no longer be the preferred hotel for American Express cardholders, and Postcard Hotels will replace them. While some redemption options have lost value, other new ones have also been added. Let’s have a complete look at all the changes to the AmEx Platinum Travel Collection.

• Taj vouchers have now lost value, as redeeming a ₹5,000 voucher now requires 12,500 points (previously fewer), and a ₹10,000 voucher requires 25,000 points, making redemptions more expensive. This alone can be considered a devaluation of Membership Rewards Points for Taj redemption.
• New redemption options include The Postcard Hotel, where 20,000 points equal a ₹10,000 voucher, and Air India, offering a ₹6,000 voucher for the same points.
• Flipkart gift vouchers removed from the American Express Platinum Travel Collection.

Bottom Line

While many were aware that some changes were incoming for AmEx Cards, most were shocked by the urgency of it all. All the changes will be effective from April 1st, leaving American Express Credit Cardholders little time to adjust or arrange their affairs. Credit card issuers should ideally provide at least 30 days’ notice before implementing new changes to the rewards structure.

Although many were dissatisfied with Taj as the preferred hotel partner, there is likely to be even less enthusiasm for Postcard Hotels, which is considered to be unnecessarily expensive by most users. This shift in voucher redemption value is perceived as a devaluation of the American Express rewards program.

Additionally, users will no longer be able to redeem their Membership Rewards points for Flipkart through the American Express Platinum Travel Collection. Despite these negative changes, there are some positive developments, such as the addition of Air India and Postcard Hotels for point redemption.

There are no other changes as of now for the American Express Platinum Card. But there shall be more changes coming to prominent cards such as the Gold Charge Card.
